Sylvain Lafortune

Since 1979, Sylvain Lafortune has been a featured dancer of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Lar Lubovitch Dance Co, O Vertigo Danse, Montreal Danse, Susan Marshall and Dancers and Martha Clarke's Off-Broadway production of The Garden of Earthly Delights. He has performed all over the world and appeared in numerous independent dance projects, films and gala performances. Still a free-lance dancer, Sylvain Lafortune also teaches regularly both in dance and circus. Recently, he has received a master degree from the dance department of the Université du Québec à Montréal and is now continuing at the doctorate level his researches on partnering in dance, his speciality.

Sylvain Lafortune has developed over the years a unique approach to teaching partnering that focuses mainly on two important aspects: the use of basic mechanical principles and of a terminology specific to partnering. With this knowledge, it becomes possible to name, analyse and understand all lifting situations and to execute them efficiently in any style of dance. During this workshop, participants will receive some theoretical information and will do practical exercises. They will be changing partners frequently and will experiment the roles of both the lifter and the liftee, so to fully understand the requirements of each exercise.
